Press Release

Minister Van Peteghem appointed as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the European Investment Bank

Minister Van Peteghem will be appointed as the new chairman of the Board of Governors of the European Investment Bank (EIB). The chairmanship is appointed in a rotating system between member states, each for the period of one year. As chairman, Minister Van Peteghem will coordinate the work of the Board of Governors and chair the annual meeting. In doing so, he will focus on the EIB's crucial role in Ukraine's economic challenges and reconstruction.

"In the coming years, the European Investment Bank will play an important role as the financial arm of our Union. The EIB has the experience and expertise to get the private sector on board and mobilise resources for the challenges facing the European Union. These range from rebuilding Ukraine to successfully rolling out the necessary sustainable and digital transition of the European economy." - Vincent Van Peteghem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, responsible for the Coordination of Fraud Prevention and the National Lottery

The EIB plays an important role as a financier of our European Union's policies. As a Union bank, it has the technical expertise to mobilise the necessary private funds to make a success of the sustainable and digital transition. To this end, the EIB possesses tailored instruments that can encourage private companies to take risks responsibly. This is also why Belgium has entered the European Tech Champions Initiative (ETCI) fund, which makes growth capital available to European tech scale-ups via the EIB.

Finally, the EIB is also playing an important role in the reconstruction of Ukraine. With the 'EU for Ukraine Initiative' and the 'EU for Ukraine Fund', the EIB will become one of the key players in that reconstruction. This by offering both expertise and financing. Our country has previously decided to contribute to this fund.
